PGT Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Most PGT fence installations in Los Angeles run between $4,130 and $10,620 fully installed, depending on fence style, linear footage, and whether we’re matching an existing PGT product or building fresh. We keep PGT-compatible hardware, posts, and gate components on our trucks for most service calls, which means most homeowners get a same-week install, not a waiting game. You’ll usually discover a failed part one of two ways: the gate starts dragging against the run, or a post leans after a hard Santa Ana blow and you notice the base hardware has cracked.
PGT is a Florida company that builds fence-grade aluminum and vinyl lines for wind and impact zones. That matters in Los Angeles because their products arrive from a coastal climate into our dry heat and occasional high winds. The materials hold up, but the installation hardware and anchoring methods need local experience. We started working with PGT profiles about eight years ago and have learned where they fail in this specific environment. More on that below.
Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT produces three fence families you’ll run across in Los Angeles neighborhoods: the PGT Impact Fence Line (aluminum, rated for windborne debris zones), PGT Vinyl Estate Fence (privacy panels with reinforced bottom rails), and PGT Low-Maintenance Picket Line (smaller aluminum profiles, often used for front-yard boundaries in areas like Sherman Oaks and Pasadena). Each series uses different post dimensions and gate hardware, so we always verify the model before ordering components.
How to identify which PGT fence you have: check the top rail underside for a stamped code, usually a two-letter prefix followed by a four-digit number. If the stamp has worn off, measure the post width. PGT Impact posts run 2½ inches square; the Vinyl Estate posts are 5 inches square with a decorative cap. The picket line uses 2-inch posts with a thinner rail. One compatibility gotcha: PGT changed their gate hinge design in 2019, and pre-2019 models use a non-adjustable hinge that is no longer manufactured. We stock a retrofit bracket that solves this without replacing the entire gate frame, which saves Los Angeles homeowners about $800 on average.

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing
- Gate drop or drag at the latch side. PGT’s factory hinges on pre-2019 models were zinc-plated, not powder-coated like the fence panels. In Los Angeles, the marine layer near Santa Monica and Playa del Rey accelerates that corrosion. The hinge pin wears, the gate drops, and eventually the latch stops engaging.
- Post lean without visible impact. We see this a lot in the Valley, especially Northridge and Chatsworth, where soil shifts seasonally between dry and wet months. If the post base was set in a shallow footer (16 inches or less), a leaning post appears within three to five years.
- Cracked bottom rail on vinyl sections. PGT’s vinyl fences hold up well in heat, but the bottom rail is often the failure point when a fence was installed too tight to the slab. Los Angeles afternoon sun heats the vinyl, it expands, and without proper expansion gaps it cracks against the post.
- Persistent gate slamming or rattling. The self-closing spring on PGT Impact gates is under high tension. When it loses strength, the gate no longer closes fully, which leaves pools and yards unsecured. This is also a safety concern if children or pets are in the home.
- Loose or spalling concrete around post bases. In older Los Angeles neighborhoods, original fencing often sits in concrete that has dried and shrunk. Water getting in along the post base widens the gap. In Panorama City and Van Nuys we regularly pull posts where the footing has essentially turned to gravel.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a PGT fence installation in Los Angeles, budget between $4,130 and $10,620 for a typical residential run, which usually covers 100 to 200 linear feet with gate hardware. Smaller repairs – a section replacement, a gate re-hang, or a latch swap – land in the $500 to $1,800 range. The biggest cost driver is post replacement: setting posts properly in Los Angeles soil means digging below the shrink-swell zone, sometimes 30 to 36 inches, with concrete and gravel drainage.
What’s included in our pricing: the PGT-compatible posts, panels, hardware, labor, and clearing of the fence line. We deliver a written line-item price before work starts. There are no allowances for “unforeseen conditions” that balloon on the final invoice. If we discover a buried tree root or an abandoned footing during the dig, we show you the cost to address it before we touch it. Our workmanship warranty runs 365 days from the completion date. If anything we installed fails in that window, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and we put it in writing on every fence job.
DIY or Call Us?
There are small checks any Los Angeles homeowner can do safely. Tighten visible gate hinge screws with a hex driver. Pull weeds and debris from around post bases so water doesn’t pool. Inspect the bottom rail for expansion clearance. That’s about it, and that’s fine.
Where DIY goes wrong: swapping a PGT gate spring. That spring is under enough tension to break a finger or take out a tooth if it slips. We never recommend a homeowner attempt it. The same caution applies to cutting PGT aluminum rails – the profile has an internal channel that says it’s hollow, but it’s load-bearing at the top rail. A bad cut compromises the fence line. Re-setting a leaning post also requires digging out the old footer, which is back work in hard Los Angeles sun. If you’d rather not spend a weekend doing that, call us at (803) 680-2547. We’ll tell you what’s wrong, what it costs, and exactly how long it takes.
FAQs

You can expect 15 to 25 years from PGT aluminum fences in Los Angeles, and 10 to 15 years from vinyl before sun damage makes the panels brittle. Gate hardware typically fails well before the fence panels do, so factor hardware replacement into your maintenance planning.
Yes, in most cases. A cracked vinyl bottom rail can be reinforced with an internal brace, and a bent aluminum picket can be cut out and replaced while keeping the original top and bottom rails. We repair where it’s structurally sound and replace only what won’t hold. Call (803) 680-2547 and we’ll assess whether repair makes financial sense on your specific panel.
A standard residential PGT fence installation in Los Angeles takes two to five working days, depending on linear footage and post conditions. Gate-only work is often finished in a single visit. We’ll give you a written timeline with the written price.
We stock PGT-compatible hinges, latches, springs, gate frames, and post caps on our trucks, which covers about 80 percent of service calls. Odd-size panels or discontinued colors may require ordering from our supplier, and we’ll tell you that lead time before we schedule anything. The retrofit hinge bracket for pre-2019 gates is always on hand.
No. The price we put in writing is the price you pay. We do not use change orders for conditions a proper site walk would have caught. If we find something during the dig that no one could have seen, we stop, show you, and get your approval before proceeding. Every price is fixed before a tool is unpacked.
