Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Barrette-compatible driveway paver units and edging systems, with most part replacements in Los Angeles running $413 to $2,950 installed depending on the component and the extent of the repair. If you’re staring at a cracked paver, a popped edging strip, or a section of driveway that’s settled into a dip, you’re in the right place. Most homeowners discover a failing Barrette paver or restraint system after the first heavy rain of the season, when a low spot turns into a puddle, or when a mower wheel catches an edging strip that’s worked loose. We can usually match the exact unit and have it on the truck within a day or two.

Key takeaways:

  • Barrette pavers and edging are modular, so you rarely need to replace an entire driveway when one section fails.
  • Installed repair pricing in Los Angeles typically lands between $413 and $2,950, with full paver driveway replacement starting at $8,260.
  • We are an independent service provider, not a Barrette affiliate. We work with Barrette products because they hold up well in Southern California, not because we’re tied to them.
  • You’ll know exactly who is coming: name, photo, and a photo ID badge at the door before we set foot on your property.

How Los Angeles homeowners usually find us

The typical call starts with “my driveway has a low spot” or “my paver edging pulled away from the border.” Sometimes it’s a cracked unit near the garage apron where a delivery truck oversteered. In neighborhoods from Reseda to Pasadena, the failure pattern is often the same: the base layer was never compacted properly, or the edge restraint was the lightweight stuff that shifts under the first hard rain. The paver itself is rarely the villain. It’s usually what’s underneath it or what’s holding it at the edges. We fix both.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette manufactures paver and edging products under several line names, and the compatibility question is the first thing we sort out on the phone. If you have the original purchase paperwork, great. If not, measure the paver thickness. Barrette driveway pavers in Southern California typically run 60mm to 80mm thick, which matters because residential walkway pavers are often thinner, around 40mm to 50mm, and they won’t hold up under vehicle weight. A paver that’s under-specified for a driveway is a common reason for cracked units in older Los Angeles installs where the original contractor cut a corner.

Edging products are where we see the most model confusion. Barrette makes spike-style paver restraints and heavier L-shaped border units. The spike style is fine for foot-traffic patios but fails quickly on driveways, especially where a car tire clips the edge turning into a garage. We stock both styles and match them by profile, not just brand. If you can text us a photo of the failed part next to a quarter or a tape measure, we’ll usually identify it before we roll a truck.

OEM versus aftermarket matters less for Barrette pavers than it does for, say, a KraftMaid cabinet hinge or a Cambria countertop seam kit. The paver units themselves are concrete, and a quality aftermarket unit in the same size and color blend will perform identically. Where OEM matters is the color. Barrette’s color lots shift over time, and a paver that’s been in the Los Angeles sun for six years has faded. We order from current Barrette production but also blend in our own inventory so a patch doesn’t look like a patch.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway Is Failing

  • Water pooling in the same spot after rain. This means the base below the pavers has settled or washed out. In Los Angeles, where rain comes in short hard bursts, a small void becomes a big one fast. The pavers are sinking, not just stained.
  • Edge restraint pulling away from the paver field. This is the weakest point of any paver driveway. When the border strip moves, pavers start to drift outward, and the whole edge line opens up. It looks cosmetic but it’s structural; the edge is what holds everything together.
  • Cracked or chipped pavers near the garage apron or along the tire path. Concrete pavers can handle weight, but not flex. If the base shifts even an inch, the paver cracks. Cracks concentrated in a wheel track are a base problem, not a paver problem.
  • Pavers rocking underfoot or under a tire. Rocking means the sand bedding below has eroded or compacted unevenly. This worsens with every bit of weight it carries. Ignore it and the rocking paver becomes a broken paver.
  • Widening gaps between units. Pavers are designed with sand-filled joints. When sand washes out and gaps widen, the interlock that gives a paver driveway its strength is gone. You’ll see weeds, ants, and eventually shifting units.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a targeted Barrette paver repair, meaning a few replacement units and re-setting a low section, runs $413 to $2,950. That includes removing the affected pavers, correcting the base where needed, reinstalling with new bedding sand and paver sand, and compacting the repair. A full paver driveway installation runs $8,260 to $21,240 depending on square footage, access, and whether we’re hauling out an old concrete slab first. Paver patio work lands between $4,130 and $12,980.

What drives cost? Access is the big one. If we can reach the driveway with a wheelbarrow and a plate compactor, we’re on the low end. If the failed section is behind a gate, up a narrow side yard, or requires cutting paver units to match irregular borders, the price climbs. We also see price differences based on whether the base is salvageable. If the original installer used decomposed granite at depth and it’s stable, we patch. If it’s shifting sand, we excavate and rebuild the base properly. You get a written price before we start, every time. No verbal estimate that surprises you at the end.

DIY or Call Us?

Paver work is a strange animal. It looks like a DIY job because it’s just blocks on the ground, and for a single cracked unit in a walkway, a careful homeowner can absolutely swap it out. But a driveway is different. The weight loading means the base prep and edge restraint have to be right, or you’ll be back out there in six months looking at the same problem. The physical work is also harder than it looks; a 60mm paver weighs about 50 pounds, and a full repair means moving a lot of them.

There’s no high-tension danger here like a garage-door spring, so this isn’t a safety “don’t touch it” warning. It’s a physics warning. If your pavers are rocking, cracking, or pulling at the edges, the top surface is telling you something about the base. Fixing the top without fixing the base is the most common reason we get called out after someone’s weekend project went sideways. Call us at (803) 680-2547 if you’re not certain what’s underneath. We’ll tell you what we see and what it costs to make it right.

Who You’re Working With

Mason Remodeling has been working on Los Angeles homes since 2004, and we’ve learned that the difference between a repair that lasts and a repair that fails is almost always in the prep work. Isaac Pruett, our owner, grew up in the Sylmar end of the San Fernando Valley and spent years watching weekend fixes fail before he started fixing them professionally. He checks every paver job the same way his dad, a finish carpenter, checked trim work: up close and personally before anyone calls it done.

Know who’s coming, know what it costs, know it’s backed up – everything else is just noise.

Every technician who arrives at your Los Angeles home is background-checked, identity-verified, and introduced to you by name and photo before they knock. That’s the Threshold Standard, and it’s how we’ve always worked. We also stock parts for KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria countertops, and Silestone surfaces if your project extends beyond the driveway.

We’re Mason Remodeling, and we’re the people who make Barrette driveways in Los Angeles hold up the way they should. Call (803) 680-2547 for a free estimate. A real person answers, any hour, any day.
