American Standard Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install American Standard-compatible driveway and paver systems across Los Angeles, with typical installed pricing between $8,260 and $21,240 depending on square footage, base prep, and paver style. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover a failed paver driveway the same way: a sinkhole forms near the curb, a section shifts after winter rain, or tree roots from a mature ficus push pavers up like piano keys. If you’re seeing any of that, you’re in the right place, and we can usually have a crew out within days, not weeks.
Here’s the thing most people don’t realize until they’ve lived with one: a paver driveway in Los Angeles isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it surface. It’s a system, and when one layer of that system fails, the pavers tell you. We’ve been rebuilding these driveways since 2004, and Isaac Pruett will tell you the same thing he tells every homeowner on a walkthrough: the pavers are never the problem. The base underneath them is.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard’s hardscape line covers a few distinct paver families, and parts are not interchangeable across all of them. The three series we service most often in Los Angeles are the Coventry Collection (tumbled, old-world finish, 6×9 and 9×9), the Holland Stone line (rectangular, stack-bond or running-bond patterns), and the permeable Aqua-Bric series, which some Los Angeles hillside homes use to meet stormwater retention requirements under the city’s Low Impact Development ordinance.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of homeowners: American Standard changed the manufacturing dimension of its Holland Stone pavers in 2018, moving from a true 4×8 to a metric 100mm x 200mm module. If your driveway was installed before 2018 and you order new Holland Stone pavers for a patch job, the new pavers will be about 2mm narrower, which compounds across a 20-foot run into a visible variance. We keep both pre-2018 and post-2018 Holland Stone on hand for exactly this reason. When you call, we’ll ask you to measure one paver and check the underside stamp, which confirms the casting date and the plant it came from.
On OEM vs aftermarket: American Standard’s proprietary color blends, especially the Sierra Blend and Charcoal tones, can be matched by quality aftermarket manufacturers like Belgard and Unilock, but the color will never be identical. For a patch job on a visible section, we recommend OEM or a deliberate full-section replacement. For a full replacement, aftermarket often saves you 15 to 20 percent with no functional difference, and we’ll quote both ways so you can decide with real numbers. We also stock compatible components for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone where hardscape integrates with built-in outdoor cabinetry or stone veneer.

Signs Your American Standard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Localized sinking or a visible depression near the curb or garage apron. This is almost always base failure: decomposed granite or sand base that has washed out below the pavers, usually from a downspout discharging onto the edge or a slow sprinkler leak you never noticed. In Los Angeles’s clay-heavy soil, water doesn’t drain so much as it travels sideways, and a small leak can undermine a 30-square-foot section in under a year.
- Pavers rocking or shifting when you step on them. That’s edge restraint failure. The plastic or aluminum edging that locks the perimeter has pulled away from the pavers, often after tree roots pushed it outward. Once the edge restraint goes, the pavers start walking, and you’ll see gaps open up along the border.
- Weeds or grass growing between pavers you regularly sweep and treat. This means the polymeric sand between the joints has been compromised, probably from water washing through during heavy rain or from freeze-thaw cycles in higher-elevation neighborhoods like the foothills. Without solid joint sand, the pavers can shift laterally and chip each other’s edges.
- A chalky white haze across the paver surface. That’s efflorescence, common in Los Angeles because our water is hard and evaporates fast. It’s cosmetic, but it’s a sign the pavers are holding moisture at the base level, which long-term leads to freeze-thaw spalling if you’re above about 1,500 feet elevation.
- Chipped corners or hairline cracks in pavers that see vehicle traffic. The American Standard paver is rated for roughly 8,000 psi compressive strength, but a paver over a void or soft spot in the base will flex beyond its tensile limit and crack. One cracked paver usually means there’s a base problem under it, not that the paver itself failed.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles, American Standard paver driveway installation runs $8,260 to $21,240, with most single-car urban lots landing between $10,000 and $14,000. Smaller repairs, like edge restraint replacement or a 50-square-foot patch, start around $700 and rarely exceed $2,500. The biggest variables are base depth (California code wants 4 to 6 inches of aggregate base plus 1 inch of bedding sand), whether the old base can be reused or must be hauled off, and the paver series itself: Coventry finishes cost more per square foot than Holland Stone.
Every quote we give is a written line-item price before any work starts. You’ll see the paver cost, the base material, the labor, the haul-away, and the compactor rental or crew equipment, all spelled out. That’s the Threshold Group standard: written price, not a verbal estimate, not a number that grows when you’re not looking. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If anything within a year of completion is not right, we come back and make it right at no cost to you. That includes a free second visit if a repair fails, with no dispute process and no conditions.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely handle yourself: inspecting the paver surface, cleaning out weed-filled joints, checking that downspouts point away from the driveway, and taking photos of the damage, including the paver underside stamps, before you call us. That saves time and helps us bring the right pavers on the first trip.
What you should not DIY: lifting and resetting pavers over a failed base, because the real repair means excavating 6 to 8 inches down, compacting fresh aggregate, and re-screeding bedding sand. Get compaction wrong and the driveway will fail again in under a year. It also involves a plate compactor, which is genuinely dangerous to rent without training, and a truckload of base material that has to go somewhere. Not to mention that a sunk section near the curb is often hiding a broken irrigation line or a cracked sewer lateral, and that’s a bigger conversation. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call (803) 680-2547 and talk it through. Estimates are free, and a person answers the phone.
FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway in Los Angeles lasts 25 to 40 years, which is roughly double the lifespan of poured concrete in our soil conditions. The pavers themselves rarely wear out; what fails is the base, the edge restraint, or the joint sand. Isaac Pruett grew up in Sylmar and has been watching Southern California driveways shift and settle since he was a kid, and his rule is simple: the base makes the driveway. Get that right and the pavers on top will outlast the house. Call (803) 680-2547 for an evaluation of what’s actually failing under your pavers.
Most issues are repairable if caught early. Edge restraint failure, localized sinkholes, and weed growth can all be fixed by lifting the affected section, recompacting the base, and resetting the pavers. Full replacement only makes sense when the base has failed across more than about half the driveway, or when you’re converting an older non-permeable system to a permeable one to comply with updated Los Angeles stormwater rules. We’ll always give you a repair price and a replacement price side by side. Call (803) 680-2547 and we’ll walk you through what your specific driveway actually needs.
A section repair like edge restraint or a 50-square-foot patch takes one day, sometimes a day and a half if we’re hauling fresh base material and compacting in lifts. A full driveway replacement on a typical Los Angeles residential lot runs three to five days from demolition to final compaction and joint sand. Weather is rarely a factor here, but hillside access can add time, since some Laurel Canyon and Mount Washington homes require the crew to move material by wheelbarrow rather than by skid steer.
We keep the most common American Standard paver sizes and color blends in stock locally, including both pre-2018 and post-2018 Holland Stone dimensions, plus matching edge restraint systems and polymeric joint sand. If we don’t have your exact paver on hand, we can usually source it through our American Standard distributor within three to five business days. You won’t be asked to order anything yourself or store pallets of pavers in your driveway while you wait. Call (803) 680-2547 and tell us what the underside stamp says, and we’ll confirm stock before we even schedule the visit.
