Cambridge Pavers Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If you have Cambridge Pavers products in or around a bathroom that’s failing, the installed remodel cost in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 to $33,040, and we can usually start within a week of your free estimate. Cambridge Pavers makes hardscaping products – pavers, wall systems, and outdoor living materials – so when they show up inside or adjacent to a bathroom, it’s almost always a paver floor, a paver accent wall, or a shower surround that ties into an outdoor space. The most common failure call we get: water is getting behind the pavers, the grout or polymeric sand is breaking down, or the pavers themselves have shifted because the original installer skipped proper waterproofing underneath.

Here’s the thing most Los Angeles homeowners don’t realize until it’s too late: Cambridge Pavers are built for outdoor freeze-thaw and foot traffic, but inside a wet bathroom they demand a completely different substrate and sealing approach. We’ve torn out more than a few “paver bathroom floors” in Sherman Oaks and Studio City where the installer laid pavers directly over plywood with no membrane, no slope to the drain, and no consideration for how paver joints handle standing shower water. That’s not a Cambridge Pavers defect. That’s a waterproofing failure disguised as a product failure.

Which Cambridge Pavers Models This Applies To

A walk-in shower with large-format tile and a built-in niche

Cambridge Pavers breaks its catalog into series families, and the one you have matters more than you’d think. The Ledgestone and Maytrx wall systems are the two we see most often in Los Angeles bathroom accent walls and shower surrounds. Sherwood, RoundTable, and Hollandstone pavers show up as bathroom floors, especially in homes where the bathroom opens to a paver patio and the owner wanted the same material to flow through. The ArmorTec and 3D lines are less common indoors but we’ve installed them in pool-bath applications where wet feet and chlorine exposure are daily realities.

Here’s a compatibility gotcha most people miss: Cambridge Pavers wall units are not the same thickness as their floor pavers, and mixing a wall-series unit into a floor layout (or vice versa) creates lippage – the tripping lip where one paver sits higher than its neighbor. If you’re matching existing pavers, pull one up and check the stamped lot number on the underside edge. Color lots shift between production runs, and a “Cambridge Charcoal” from 2019 won’t match a 2024 run perfectly. We keep samples of current Cambridge Pavers color lots in our Los Angeles shop so we can match what you have, not what the catalog shows.

One more reality check for Southern California specifically: pavers installed in a bathroom that gets direct morning sun through a window will fade at a different rate than pavers in a windowless powder room. If we’re patching a section, we’ll flag that color-match risk up front rather than surprise you with a two-tone floor.

Signs Your Cambridge Pavers Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Efflorescence – white chalky haze on the paver surface. This is mineral salts wicking through the paver, and in a bathroom it usually means water is trapped beneath the pavers with no drainage path. The fix is rarely “clean it off.” The fix is pulling the affected section, addressing the moisture source, and re-setting with proper base and drainage.
  • Loose or rocking pavers underfoot near the shower or tub. That means the bedding layer is washing out or the edge restraint has failed. A rocking paver in a wet bathroom is a slip-and-fall waiting to happen, especially for older adults or kids stepping out of a tub.
  • Polymeric sand washing out of the joints. If you sweep sand out every time you clean the floor, the joints were either over-watered during installation, the wrong sand was used for a wet area, or there’s no slope moving water toward the drain. Each shower sends water through those joints and into whatever is underneath.
  • Dark staining or musty odor along baseboards or paver edges. That’s water wicking into framing or drywall behind the pavers. In Los Angeles homes built before 1980, that subfloor is often tongue-and-groove lumber that rots silently. By the time you smell it, the repair scope has grown.
  • Cracked or spalled paver surfaces with small flakes popping off. Spalling in a bathroom is frequently caused by repeated wet-dry cycling plus cleaning chemicals. Bleach-based bathroom cleaners are brutal on concrete pavers. We’ll replace the damaged units and recommend a sealer and cleaner routine that won’t eat the surface.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled hall bathroom with subway tile and a floating vanity

A Cambridge Pavers bathroom remodel in Los Angeles runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, with most full bathroom projects landing in the $14,000 to $22,000 range. Where you fall depends on what’s failing and what’s underneath. A paver floor tear-out with proper waterproofing, new substrate, and re-installation in a standard 5×8 bathroom starts around $6,000. A full gut renovation with Cambridge Pavers on the floor and an accent wall, plus new shower pan, glass, vanity, and fixtures, climbs to the top of that range and sometimes beyond if you’re adding structural work.

That price includes the parts, the labor, the tear-out and disposal of the old material, waterproofing (true waterproofing – membrane, not paint-on sealer), and any substrate repair. We use Schluter Kerdi and Laticrete systems for wet areas under paver installations because they don’t fail when properly installed. Your written price also states our workmanship warranty: 365 from completion date, with a free return visit if anything fails inside that window. No change orders, no “we found something behind the wall” surprises. The only exception is if we open a wall and find termite damage or rotted framing no one could have seen – and we stop, show you, and price the fix before touching it.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do some diagnosis on your own. Pull a loose paver and look at what’s beneath it. If you see raw plywood, black stains, or sand that’s turned to mud, stop there and call us. If the pavers are solid and the issue is cosmetic – surface staining, worn sealer – there are quality paver cleaners and sealers you can apply yourself in an afternoon. The line where DIY goes wrong is waterproofing. Installing a proper bathroom substrate under pavers means sloping, membrane installation, drainage matting, and integration with the shower pan and wall waterproofing. Get any of that wrong and you’re re-doing the entire job in 12 to 18 months, usually after the subfloor has started rotting. We’ve fixed enough DIY paver bathroom floors in the Valley to say this plainly: the materials cost more than you think, and the mistakes cost triple what the labor would have.

Isaac Pruett has spent enough time pulling apart failed tile and paver jobs across Los Angeles to know exactly where corners get cut. If you’re not sure whether your Cambridge Pavers bathroom needs a patch or a full re-do, call (803) 680-2547. We’ll send someone who knows what to look for, and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts.
