Unilock Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have Unilock surfaces in your bathroom and something’s failing, here’s what you need to know up front: a full Unilock-compatible bathroom remodel in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed. That covers tear-out, waterproofing, tile or paver-finish work, fixtures, and finish carpentry. Most Los Angeles owners we hear from discover a problem the same way: a hairline crack running through a Unilock paver on the shower floor, grout that won’t stay sealed, or a ledge course that’s begun to shift against the wall after six or seven years of daily steam and water.
We’re Mason Remodeling, an independent Los Angeles remodeling company, not affiliated with Unilock. But we work with Unilock products regularly because they’re built for outdoor abuse and, used indoors, they bring that same durability to bathroom floors, shower surrounds, and accent walls. When a Unilock piece or installation fails, the fix usually isn’t a quick patch. It’s knowing which product line you have, what’s compatible, and whether the failure is in the material or what’s underneath it. We handle both.
Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock makes dozens of paver and wall product lines, but in Los Angeles bathrooms we mostly see three: Beacon Hill Flagstone for large-format shower floors, Umbriano for honed, contemporary wall and floor finishes, and Mattoni or Copthorne for accent bands and curbs. Each has different thickness specs and joint requirements. Umbriano, for example, runs about 2-3/8 inches thick with a tighter joint than Beacon Hill, which sits closer to 2-1/2 inches and expects a wider sand or grout joint. That might sound like a small difference, but it changes how the base is floated and how water moves off the surface.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see most in Los Angeles: Unilock pavers used indoors still carry their outdoor dimensional tolerances. That’s fine on a patio, but on a bathroom floor that pitches to a drain at 1/4 inch per foot, a 1/16-inch variation between pavers creates lippage. Your toe catches it, water pools in the low spot, and the grout starts to fail. The fix is matching the paver line to the right substrate and sometimes milling or selecting individual units. If you’re replacing a failed piece, the label is usually on the underside of a loose paver or on the original order paperwork. If neither exists, we identify the line by color, surface texture, and edge profile.
For replacement pieces, Unilock’s OEM pavers are the best match for color and dimensional consistency. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist, but we’ve seen color batches drift enough to be visible under bathroom lighting. For a shower floor or curb, where everything is close and wet, we recommend staying with Unilock. For an accent wall where you’re choosing a whole new color, an aftermarket equivalent can save real money.

Signs Your Unilock Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Hairline cracks running across a paver or along a grout joint – This usually means movement underneath. In Los Angeles, a lot of pre-1990 homes have mortar beds that shrink over decades or slab foundations that settle. The paver or tile is just reflecting what’s happening below.
- Grout that keeps crumbling in the same spot – Persistent grout failure in one area signals deflection, not a grout problem. Water gets in, the substrate flexes, and the grout is the first thing to let go. Re-grouting without fixing the movement is a recurring bill.
- A paver that sounds hollow when you tap it – Hollow sound means the bond has broken between the paver and the bed. Water is now trapped in the void. In a Los Angeles bathroom with daily showers, that void becomes a mold source within weeks.
- Water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom – This is the failure most people find at the worst time: a slow leak has made it through the waterproofing layer and is now traveling through the subfloor. By the time you see the stain, the damage is usually several months old.
- Efflorescence – white, chalky deposits – appearing on the paver surface – Unilock pavers are dense, but when water moves through them and evaporates on the surface, it leaves mineral salts behind. That white bloom means water is migrating through the system in a way it shouldn’t be.
If you’re seeing any of these, the sooner someone looks at it, the smaller the fix. What starts as a $500 re-grout becomes a $20,000 rebuild when water sits in a wall cavity for a year.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Unilock-specific bathroom work in Los Angeles, here are the numbers we give on the phone:
- Single paver or small section replacement on a shower floor or curb: $945 to $3,540 installed
- Full Unilock shower pan rebuild with new waterproofing: $5,310 to $14,160
- Complete Unilock bathroom remodel (floor, shower, fixtures, vanity): $10,620 to $33,040
The price difference between the low and high end comes down to three things: the size of the space, whether the subfloor or shower base needs to be rebuilt, and whether you’re keeping existing fixtures or replacing everything. Every price we give is written before any work starts. No verbal estimate that grows on the final bill. For the parts themselves, paver replacement cost is usually a small fraction of the total; the labor to lift, prep, and reset without damaging adjacent pieces is where the real time goes. All of our work carries a written guarantee with clearly stated terms, including what’s covered and for how long: 365 days from the completion date. If it’s not right, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s an honest split here. If you have a loose paver on an accent wall or a single hairline crack in a dry area, you can reasonably pop the piece, clean the bed, and see what’s underneath. What you should not do is pull up a shower floor paver yourself. Once you break the waterproofing plane under a Unilock shower pan, you’ve created a direct path for water into your subfloor and the ceiling below, and the repair just went from hundreds to thousands. Same goes for anything involving the drain assembly: the clamping ring and weep holes are doing specific work, and disturbing them without re-torquing correctly leaves you with a slow leak that you won’t notice until the damage is done.
If you’re not sure which situation you’re in, call us at (803) 680-2547 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s something you can check safely or something that needs a person on site. No charge for the conversation.
FAQs

Unilock pavers are rated for decades outdoors, and indoors they routinely last 15 to 25 years in a bathroom application when the substrate and waterproofing are done correctly. The paver itself rarely fails first; in Los Angeles, we more often see the grout, the base, or the waterproofing layer fail while the Unilock product is still in good shape. Call (803) 680-2547 and we can tell you whether your issue is the material or what’s under it.
Yes, single pavers and small sections can be lifted, the base corrected, and the paver reset when the failure is localized and the surrounding waterproofing is intact. What can’t be repaired is a shower pan whose waterproofing layer has been compromised; at that point, partial repair every few months becomes more expensive than a proper rebuild. Call us at (803) 680-2547 for an honest read on which situation you have.
A single paver reset with base correction is usually a one-day job. A full shower pan rebuild with new waterproofing runs three to five working days, including cure time on the waterproofing before the pavers go down. We’ll give you a written schedule with the written price before any work starts. Call (803) 680-2547 to set up a walkthrough.
We carry Unilock-compatible installation materials, grout, edge restraints, and a small selection of current-run Beacon Hill and Umbriano pieces on the truck. For older or less common Unilock lines, we order direct from Unilock distribution or our local Los Angeles hardscape suppliers, which usually adds two to five days to the timeline. Mention your product line when you call (803) 680-2547 and we can estimate lead time before you even book a visit.
Know who’s coming, know what it costs, know it’s backed up – everything else is just noise. If your Unilock bathroom has a problem, call (803) 680-2547 and we’ll walk it through with you.
