Therma-Tru Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have a Therma-Tru door or window that’s warped, leaking, or hard to lock, we can usually match the replacement part and install it within the same week. Typical installed pricing for Therma-Tru door slabs, weatherseal kits, hinges, sills, and glass runs $350 – $2,900 in Los Angeles depending on the model and what failed. Most homeowners discover the problem one of three ways: the door sticks in summer when the frame swells, the sweep lets daylight through at the bottom corner, or the threshold has rotted out after a few rainy winters. Whatever triggered it, this page tells you what to check, what it costs, and who to call.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru’s product line splits into a few families, and the replacement part you need depends on which one you have. The Fiber-Classic and Smooth-Star lines are the most common in Los Angeles homes built after 1995, and they use a fiberglass skin over a foam core. The Pulse series adds a wider stile profile and heavier-duty hinges. The Tru-Defense line is geared toward impact and fire ratings, which you’ll see more in canyon areas like Laurel Canyon or Benedict Canyon where brush clearance codes matter.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: Therma-Tru door slabs are not universal across lines. A Smooth-Star slab will not drop cleanly into a Fiber-Classic frame without hinge route and sweep adjustments, and the weatherstrip channel differs between generations. If you’re not sure which line you have, check the sticker on the hinge edge of the door slab near the bottom rail. It usually shows a serial number and the series name. If the sticker’s gone, send us a photo of the door edge and we can usually identify it. We install OEM Therma-Tru parts as our default, and we also carry quality aftermarket equivalents for high-wear items like sweeps, astragals, and threshold caps where the OEM part costs twice as much for the same polymer.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Therma-Tru Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Daylight under the door or along the bottom sweep. The vinyl sweep has compressed or cracked, which is the single most common failure we see after four or five Los Angeles summers of direct sun on a west-facing entry. It’s a $35 part and 20 minutes of work.
- Draft or dust trails along the jambs. The compression weatherstrip has gone flat, or the door has settled out of square. In older houses near the foothills, foundation shift is real, and a door that rubs at the top corner is often telling you the frame moved, not the hinge.
- Sticking, especially in August and September. Therma-Tru doors are thermally stable, but the wooden jambs around them are not. When humidity spikes after a Santa Ana cycle, the jamb swells and the slab binds. A slight hinge adjustment or jamb shave usually fixes it without replacing anything.
- Rotted or spongy threshold. The wood-core threshold under the aluminum cap absorbs water from sprinkler overspray and rain splashback. This is a Los Angeles-specific problem: clay soils and flat concrete entries keep water at the base of the frame longer than the manufacturer’s drainage design anticipated.
- Lock set and deadbolt misaligned. The strike plate has dropped or the door has sagged on the hinges. If you have to lift the handle to get the deadbolt to throw, the hinge screws have probably stripped out of the jamb. Longer screws usually fix it permanently.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote for Therma-Tru work in Los Angeles, parts and labor included:
- Weatherseal and sweep replacement (single door): $120 – $340
- Threshold cap replacement: $180 – $450
- Hinge replacement (set of three, ball-bearing): $140 – $380
- Door slab replacement (Smooth-Star or Fiber-Classic, pre-hung or slab swap): $1,200 – $2,900
- Full Therma-Tru entry system replacement (door plus sidelites or transom): $2,900 – $6,500
- Therma-Tru window sash or glass replacement (per unit): $350 – $1,100
The range depends on whether you’re in a standard tract home in Sherman Oaks with a standard 36″ entry, or a custom Spanish-style place in Silver Lake with an arched transom and iron grille work that has to be reset. Every quote we give is a written, line-item price before any work begins. We don’t do verbal estimates that grow on the final bill, and we don’t change the price once we open the wall or the frame. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the slab binds, the sweep fails, or the threshold shifts within a year of completion, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely replace a door sweep or a strike plate yourself if you’re handy with a screwdriver and a hacksaw blade. Those are $15 – $40 in parts at any hardware store, and you’re not risking injury or property damage. Where DIY goes wrong is when the slab needs to be pulled and re-hung. Therma-Tru slabs are heavy, the hinge mortises are precise, and a door that’s out of plane by a sixteenth of an inch at the top will never seal correctly. You’ll chase it with shims and sandpaper and still end up with a draft. If the threshold is involved, we’re also dealing with flashing and sill pan integrity, which means water damage if done wrong. That’s a call to us. Also, if you have a Tru-Defense fire-rated entry, leave it alone entirely; altering a rated assembly voids the listing and can fail a home inspection when you sell.
FAQs

Therma-Tru door slabs themselves carry a limited lifetime warranty and realistically last 25 to 35 years in our climate, but the wearing parts (sweeps, weatherstrip, thresholds, hinges) last 5 to 12 years depending on sun exposure and how often the door cycles. If your slab is fine and the seal is shot, replace the small parts first before pricing a new door. Call (803) 680-2547 and we’ll tell you over the phone which direction makes sense.
It depends on what’s actually wrong. A slab that binds because the jamb swelled is a repair. A slab that has delaminated or cracked at the stile is a replacement. Fiberglass skins don’t warp like wood, so if the door itself is visibly bowed, you’ve likely got frame movement or a manufacturing defect. We’ll assess it free and tell you straight what needs to happen.
Most weatherseal, sweep, hinge, and threshold jobs are done in under two hours from arrival. A full door slab replacement takes half a day including re-setting the hardware, adjusting the reveals, and hauling the old door. A full entry system with sidelites can run a full day or a day and a half.
We stock the common wear parts on our truck: sweeps for most Smooth-Star and Fiber-Classic profiles, compression weatherstrip, threshold caps in standard widths, ball-bearing hinges. Oddball items like a custom sidelite glass pack or a Pulse series stile component typically take 5 to 10 business days from Therma-Tru’s distribution network. We’ll tell you the timeline before you commit to anything, and the written quote covers the wait.
Mason Remodeling is an independent home services company. We are not a Therma-Tru dealer, distributor, or authorized warranty agent, but we work on Therma-Tru products every week and know the line well. We also carry parts for KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone surfaces. If your home shows other signs of wear from the San Fernando Valley sun, our team can address those at the same visit.
