Owens Corning Kitchen Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

A full Owens Corning kitchen remodel in Los Angeles typically runs $16,520 to $53,100, depending on scope, and most projects take 4 to 8 weeks from demo to final walkthrough. We stock Owens Corning insulation and moisture-management materials on our trucks for kitchen gut-outs, and we can typically start within 10 to 14 days of your written estimate.

Most Los Angeles homeowners call us after they’ve pulled back a cabinet or opened a wall and found something that shouldn’t be there: damp insulation, mold at the baseboard, or fiberglass that’s turned gray and packed down to nothing. Owens Corning products are built well, but they’re only as good as the installation around them. In LA’s older homes, especially in neighborhoods like West Adams, Silver Lake, and the Valley, kitchens were often built without proper ventilation or moisture barriers, and that’s where failures start.

Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To

In kitchen remodeling, Owens Corning materials show up in three places: wall and ceiling insulation (typically the EcoTouch or PINK Fiberglas lines), air and moisture sealing products, and sometimes acoustic panels used behind cabinet walls. The product you have depends on when your kitchen was built or last opened up. Homes remodeled in the last 8 to 10 years often have EcoTouch R-13 or R-15 batts in exterior kitchen walls, while older LA homes might have R-11 or nothing at all behind the sink wall.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: insulation R-value requirements changed with California’s Title 24 energy code, and what passed inspection in 2005 won’t pass in Los Angeles today. If you’re opening up a kitchen wall for new cabinets or moving plumbing, the exposed cavities need to meet current code before we close them back up. Owens Corning makes compliant products across every R-value we need, but the product label matters. Check the kraft facing color and printed R-value before you assume what’s in your walls. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products alongside Owens Corning materials when a kitchen pulls in cabinetry and surfaces.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for insulation and moisture barrier products, Owens Corning IS the OEM standard, and there’s rarely a reason to substitute. Aftermarket fiberglass batts can meet spec, but we’ve found roll density and fit vary enough that gaps happen, and gaps are what cause cold spots and condensation in Los Angeles kitchens. We install Owens Corning by default on every kitchen project unless a homeowner specifically requests something else in writing.

Signs Your Owens Corning Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Cold wall behind the sink cabinet. Insulation has slumped or was never installed in that cavity. Outside walls behind sinks are the most common miss in older LA homes, and you’ll feel the temperature difference with your hand against the cabinet back.
  • Musty smell that gets worse in summer. Moisture is trapped against compressed or wet fiberglass. Los Angeles summer humidity plus a kitchen’s daily steam cycle pushes condensation into the wall, and once the insulation gets wet, it stops working and stays wet.
  • Visible mold or dark streaks at the baseboard. Failed moisture barrier or no barrier at all. This is the warning sign we see most in Los Angeles homes built before 1990, where kitchens were framed with no vapor control behind drywall.
  • Draft you can feel near electrical outlets on outside walls. Gaps around the outlet boxes where insulation was cut wrong or pulled back during original construction. Every outlet is a potential air leak if the installer didn’t seal behind it.
  • Kitchen that’s consistently 5 to 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. Missing or failed insulation in the ceiling cavity above, especially in single-story homes with attic space. Owens Corning ceiling batts can shift or compress over time, especially if someone stored items on top of them.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Owens Corning kitchen remodel in Los Angeles runs $16,520 to $53,100. Smaller kitchens, where you’re keeping the existing footprint and mostly updating surfaces and insulation, land in the $16,520 to $23,600 range. Larger projects, including moving plumbing, adding an island, or replacing a load-bearing wall, push toward the top of the range.

What drives the spread is scope: how many walls we open, whether we’re moving electrical or gas lines, what condition the framing is in underneath the old cabinets, and which Owens Corning products the project needs. Every estimate is written out line by line before you sign anything, and it includes materials, labor, permits, inspection scheduling, and disposal. The written price we give you at the start is the price you pay at the end, no change orders unless you change the scope.

Every kitchen remodel is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If anything isn’t right within a year of the completion date, we come back and make it right at no cost to you.

Why a “cheap” kitchen remodel in Los Angeles ends up costing more

The cheapest bid on a kitchen remodel usually means someone skips the insulation entirely or pushes R-13 where code requires R-21. I’ve opened walls in Los Angeles kitchens where the “insulation” was a single layer of foil-faced bubble wrap, and the homeowner had already paid for a full remodel five years earlier. Re-doing a bad kitchen remodel costs more than doing it right the first time, and that’s not a mistake we let our customers make.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: pull an outlet cover on an outside kitchen wall and look for insulation behind the box, run your hand along the baseboard after a humid day and feel for damp, or poke your head into the attic above the kitchen and see if batts are in place and dry. Those checks tell you if something’s wrong without opening anything up.

The part where DIY goes wrong is opening walls. Kitchen walls in Los Angeles hide electrical, plumbing, and sometimes gas lines, and cutting into drywall without knowing what’s behind it is how people end up in an emergency room or with a flooded kitchen. Also, insulation and moisture barrier work only works if it’s installed to current Title 24 code, and a handyman can’t pull that permit. Once a homeowner opens the wall and does amateur insulation work, we can’t sign off on the framing or moisture seal, which means the remodel gets more expensive before it gets done right. Call (803) 680-2547 and we’ll look at it before you touch anything.
