CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have CertainTeed products in your bathroom and something has failed, we can match the replacement part and install it correctly. A full bathroom remodel using CertainTeed-backed materials in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 depending on size, finish level, and what’s behind the walls. We stock common CertainTeed-compatible components on our trucks, and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts.
Most homeowners find us the same way: a shower wall panel has warped at the seam, a corner bead on a CertainTeed drywall product is cracking, or a first-generation CertainTeed ventilation board has finally given up after years of steam. They want to know if it can be fixed without ripping the whole bathroom apart, what the real cost is, and who is actually going to show up at the door. We’ll answer all three.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed makes a wide range of building products that end up in bathrooms: gypsum board (including moisture-resistant and mold-resistant lines), backer board for tile and shower surrounds, insulation, and ventilation products. When something fails, the first question is which product line you actually have, because the fix differs by series. CertainTeed’s Moisture-Resistant Gypsum Board has a green-tinted face paper. Their M2Tech board is lighter and scored differently. Their GlasRoc gypsum board has a dense fiberglass mat face, not paper, and it behaves differently when wet.
Here’s what to check before you call: look for the product name printed on the backside or edge of the board if any is exposed. Pull the switch plate off a wall outlet and peek at the drywall edge behind it. If you have tile over a shower surround, the backer board type matters more than the tile – CertainTeed backer board is a cement-based panel that fails differently than green board. One compatibility gotcha we see in Los Angeles constantly: homeowners patch a CertainTeed fiberglass-mat board with a standard paper joint compound, and it delaminates within a season because the two materials bond differently. It’s a cheap fix done wrong the first time. OEM CertainTeed fasteners and joint treatments cost a few dollars more per sheet and we always use them on CertainTeed board. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but for moisture-prone Los Angeles bathrooms, the OEM route is the only one we recommend.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Soft or spongy wallboard around the shower valve or tub spout. Water is getting behind the fixture plate and soaking the board. On CertainTeed moisture-resistant board, the gypsum core swells long before you see paint bubbling. The fix usually involves cutting out a section and patching with the correct board type.
- Tape seams lifting or cracking along the ceiling-to-wall corners. This is often steam-related in a bathroom without proper exhaust. The only real repair is removing the failed tape, re-taping with a moisture-rated compound, and resolving the ventilation problem. Patching over it just hides it for six months.
- Musty odor that doesn’t clear with cleaning. Mold is growing inside the wall cavity, not on the surface. CertainTeed mold-resistant board slows it but doesn’t stop it when there’s a persistent leak. The board has to come out to find the leak source.
- Tile grout cracking in a shower that’s less than five years old. This points to the backer board degrading underneath, often because the original installer used the wrong screw type or spacing. CertainTeed cement backer board needs corrosion-resistant screws every 6 to 8 inches on vertical framing. We’ve pulled boards where someone used drywall screws, and the rust had eaten through the board under the tile.
- Paint peeling in a bathroom where the wall feels cold to the touch. This is usually failed insulation behind the board or missing vapor barrier. CertainTeed’s older insulated sheathing products were never rated for interior wet areas, and we see them used that way in older Los Angeles remodels. The fix is reframing the wall with proper moisture-rated insulation.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A CertainTeed bathroom remodel in the Los Angeles market runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, depending on scope. Here’s how the numbers break down so you can self-qualify before you pick up the phone.
- Small bathroom remodel (shower, floor, vanity, drywall swap): $5,900 – $14,160
- Full bathroom remodel including CertainTeed board replacement throughout: $10,620 – $33,040
- Shower re-build only with CertainTeed backer board and waterproofing: $5,310 – $14,160
- Isolated wallboard replacement + re-tape + prime (wall not painted): $1,000 – $3,000 depending on access and square footage
What drives the range: whether you’re patching a section or gutting to the studs, whether the framing has rotted, and whether there’s asbestos-era material or lead paint to remediate. We use a written line-item estimate, so you’ll see parts, labor, and materials separately. Every project gets the written price before we start, the 365-Day Done Right Promise on the workmanship, and a free return visit if an installation fails within that year. No exceptions, no fine print games.

Some things you can do safely on your own: pull the trim plate off your shower valve and check for moisture staining behind it, run the exhaust fan and see if toilet paper holds to the grate (a good way to check airflow), and look for loose grout lines. These are diagnostic. They tell you what’s going on.
Where DIY goes sideways is replacing any board in a wet area. Cutting out failed CertainTeed board in a shower and patching it correctly requires knowing how the original waterproofing was installed, which board type matches, and how to get the seams sealed so moisture doesn’t find the patch. We’ve fixed more bad patches in Los Angeles bathrooms than we can count, and most of them cost twice what a correct repair would have cost the first time. If your bathroom is over a living space or shared wall, a bad patch means mold in places you won’t see until it’s expensive. That’s when you call us at (803) 680-2547.
FAQs

Property installed CertainTeed moisture-resistant board and backer board typically last 20 to 30 years in Los Angeles bathrooms, assuming the ventilation is adequate. The board itself fails early when it’s installed wrong or when a leak goes unaddressed, not because the product wears out. Coastal-adjacent neighborhoods with higher humidity can shorten that, but the real killer is a bathroom fan that never gets used.
In most cases, yes, the failed section can be cut out and patched without gutting the bathroom, as long as the framing is sound and the waterproofing is intact. If the board is rotten to the studs, you’re looking at a larger replacement. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before we quote it, and the quote will be in writing.
An isolated wallboard patch in a dry area takes one visit, usually a day or less. A full shower re-build with CertainTeed backer board takes three to five working days including tile and waterproofing cure time. We’ll give you a schedule before we start, and we’ll call if anything changes. Call (803) 680-2547 for a timeline on your specific bathroom.
We stock common CertainTeed board types, fasteners, joint treatments, and backer board on our trucks, and we order anything unusual from our supplier for the next available install date. You don’t need to source anything yourself. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone if your remodel includes cabinets or countertops alongside the CertainTeed work.
